7-Ingredient Steak Tortas

Ingredients
  

For the Steak
  • 1 lb sirloin steak
  • 1 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 1/2 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 lime, halved
For the Tortas
  • 6 hoagie rolls split open, toasted if desired
  • 1 (15-ounce) can refried beans warmed
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese about 6 ounces
  • 2 vine-ripened tomatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded iceberg lettuce
Optional Toppings
  • sliced avocado
  • pickled or raw red onions
  • pickled jalapeños
  • hot sauce

Method
 

  1. Season the sirloin steak with chili powder, cumin, garlic salt, and black pepper. Drizzle with vegetable oil and the juice of half a lime.
  2. Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the steak for 3-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, or to your desired doneness. Let the steak rest for 5 minutes before slicing thinly against the grain.
  3. Spread mayonnaise on the split sides of the hoagie rolls.
  4. Layer the bottom half of each roll with refried beans, sliced steak, Monterey Jack cheese, tomato slices, and shredded lettuce.
  5. Add any optional toppings like avocado, red onions, or jalapeños. Drizzle with hot sauce if desired.
  6. Place the top half of the roll on each torta and serve immediately.
