Ingredients

For the Mozzarella Sticks
  • 1 pound mozzarella string cheese cut into thirds
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
For Serving (Optional)
  • marinara sauce for dipping

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Baking sheet
  • Shallow dishes

Method

  1. Prepare your dredging stations. In the first shallow dish, place the flour. In the second shallow dish, whisk the eggs. In the third shallow dish, combine the panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Take each piece of cut mozzarella string cheese and dredge it first in the flour, shaking off any excess. Then dip it into the beaten eggs, ensuring it's fully coated. Finally, roll it in the seasoned panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
  3. Place the coated mozzarella sticks on a baking sheet in a single layer. You can freeze them for about 15-20 minutes to help them hold their shape better during cooking, though this step is optional.
  4. Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (190°C).
  5. Arrange the mozzarella sticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket, working in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. You want them to have space for air to circulate.
  6. Air fry for 6-8 minutes, or until the breading is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted and gooey. Flip them halfway through cooking if desired for even crispiness.
  7. Carefully remove the mozzarella sticks from the air fryer. Serve immediately with marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

For best results, ensure the mozzarella is well-coated in the breadcrumbs. If you find the cheese is leaking out, you can double-dip them in the egg and breadcrumbs.
