For the French Toast Bake
  • 8 slices Bread stale or day-old, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 cups Milk whole milk recommended
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1/4 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp Nutmeg
  • 1.5 cups Mixed berries fresh or frozen

  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Maple syrup

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are moistened. Gently press down any floating bread.
  5. Scatter the mixed berries over the top of the bread mixture.
  6. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the French toast bake is set and golden brown on top. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
  7. Let the bake cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup, if desired.

Notes

For a richer flavor, you can let the bread soak in the egg mixture for 30 minutes in the refrigerator before baking. If using frozen berries, do not thaw them before adding to the bake.
