Course: Breakfast, Dessert

Ingredients

For the Roll-Ups
  • 10 slices white sandwich bread
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
For the French Toast Coating
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
For Cooking
  • 2-3 tablespoons butter for frying

Equipment

  • Rolling pin
  • Skillet
  • Small bowl
  • Shallow bowl

Method

  1. Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a rolling pin to flatten each slice.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, brown sugar, and 2 tablespoons of cinnamon.
  3. Spread this mixture evenly on each bread slice, leaving a small border at the edges.
  4. Roll up each slice tightly. Seal the edges with gentle pressure.
  5. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
  6. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add butter.
  7. Dip each roll-up in the egg mixture. Place them seam-side down in the skillet.
  8. Cook for 2-3 minutes total, rotating to brown all sides.

Notes

Use fresh, soft bread for the best results when rolling. Avoid oversoaking the roll-ups in the egg mixture. Keep the heat at medium to prevent burning. These can be made ahead and reheated, and they freeze well for up to 1 month.
