Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 teaspoons seasoned salt like Lawry’s
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 8 ounces dried pasta shells 1/2 pound
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can crushed tomatoes not drained
  • 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese about 2 cups shredded
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or half and half

Equipment

  • 12-inch straight-sided skillet with a lid
  • Cast iron skillet with a lid
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Use a 12-inch straight-sided skillet with a lid, or a large cast iron skillet with a lid.
  2. Add the oil to the skillet, then add the ground beef. Break the beef into pieces with a spatula. Cook until browned, about 4 minutes. Season with seasoned salt and cook for 1 more minute.
  3. Add the beef broth, pasta shells, and crushed tomatoes to the skillet. Stir to combine. Cover and cook until the broth thickens and the shells are tender, 8 to 12 minutes. Stir once or twice during cooking.
  4. Turn off the heat. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and heavy cream until the cheese is melted and the mixture is creamy. Serve immediately.
